Professor Wu Jianxin talks about the research and methods of daily life history

Onthe evening of March 31st, Professor Wu Jianxin gave a lecture on"The Research and Methods of the History of DailyLife--Illustrating the Daily Life of Guangzhou People at the End ofthe Qing Dynasty" for the teachers and students of theDepartment of History of our college in Room 309. Most teachers andmany students in the history department listened to this lecture. Thelecture was chaired by Prof. Haiyan Yan, head of the Department ofHistory.


Thislecture mainly talked about the daily life and changes of Guangzhoupeople in the late Qing Dynasty and early Republic of China.Professor Wu Jianxin introduced all aspects of the folk life ofGuangzhou people at that time, such as customs, entertainment,medical treatment, etc. It reveals the reasons for the social changesbehind daily life and its historical connotation.




Duringthe lecture, Professor Wu first mentioned the research dynamics andobjects of life history. Past studies have focused too much on macroissues and their political and institutional history studies, whileignoring the study of folk daily life. Therefore, Professor Wuparticularly agrees with Liang Qichao's view of history and requireshistorians to pay more attention to it. The key to mastering theresearch methods of the history of daily life is not only to haverich professional knowledge and to collect a large amount ofhistorical data, but also to understand the history from the detailsof daily life and embed the daily life of ordinary people into theeconomic structure and organizational structure of the local society.3. Interpretation in the cultural structure and comparison of thelifestyle changes of people in different geographical societies.During the lecture, Professor Wu used a humorous and rigorous way oftelling, and occasionally used authentic Cantonese to bring a directperception of historical dialects, which brought a benefit to theteachers and students.




Inthe Q & A session, Professor Wu told Guangxi University studentswith his years of academic hard work and life experience: "Theultimate purpose of academics is to serve life. Do n’t neglect lifebecause of academics. We must understand how to stimulate life inacademics. Enthusiasm. "
